Ganzhou Municipal Education Commission is the predecessor of Ganzhou Municipal Bureau of Education, which is responsible for municipal educational undertakings and language work, concerning management of municipal basic education, vocational education, education offered by social forces and language work, supervision and evaluation of municipal education work, and assistance of coordination and guidance work of municipal higher education.
Principal Functions:
To implement national guiding principals and policies for educational undertakings; to draft relevant municipal rules and regulations; to study the important issues of the development and reform of the municipal education; to direct and coordinate the education and teaching management work of towns and other departments of municipal government.
 To investigate and put forward strategies of educational reform and development and master plans for municipal educational development; to formulate the policy of educational structural reform as well as the emphases, structure and speed of educational development, and to direct and coordinate the implementation of this work; to be responsible for collecting, analyzing and releasing municipal educational information.
To make out, coordinate and direct the municipal education system reform, harmonious relations within and outside education; to establish the proper education system and its operation system in accordance with the socialism market economy system.
To manage educational funds, take part in formulating guidelines and policies of fund-raising, financial allocation and capital construction for educational purpose; to monitor educational funds raising and the expenditure for educational purposes across the city; to manage in accordance with relevant regulations educational aids and loans from abroad, Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR and Taiwan district.
 To manage the municipal basic education, primary and secondary vocational education, adult primary and secondary education and etc; to organize and implement national and provincial establishment standard for primary and secondary schools, arrange and rearrange the school net reasonably, and set up teaching requirements; to direct the pedagogical reform of secondary education and types of education lower than that level, and to organize the supervision and evaluation of the implementation of 9-year compulsory schooling, the eradication of illiteracy among young and middle-aged adults and development of secondary and higher education.
To draft regulations for education offered by social forces; to audit and supervise secondary schools offered by social forces; to direct, manage, supervise and evaluate the running of schools offered by social forces.
To administer the whole city's primary and secondary schools'  teachers' work; to certify and manage primary and secondary schools'  teachers' professional qualifications under the unified plan of relevant superior departments; to organize honor & reward work and on-job-further-education among the education system; to take part in the checking work of organizational standards for primary and secondary schools (including kindergartens); to direct and coordinate with schools to carry out the staff and allocation system reform; to make overall plans for the team construction of teachers and administrative staff for schools.
 To manage education of different levels and examinations within its limits of authority; to take charge of the management of school rolls for students of municipal primary and secondary schools (including vocational schools).
To organize and manage the recruitment work of schools of different levels and the work of directing graduates to find jobs.
 To manage municipal long-distance education and the construction work of informationization in the education system; to take charge of municipal science and pedagogical research work. 
To manage the municipal language work; to implement national guideline, policies, laws and regulations of language work; to compile medium and long term layout for language work; to direct the popularization and testing of Mandarin. 
To manage foreign communications and international co-operations of municipal education system; to manage the relevant work of Chinese students studying abroad, foreign students studying in China and foreign experts coming to China; to take charge of foreign exchanges and co-operations.
 To direct the municipal higher education.
To undertake other tasks assigned by the Ganzhou Municipal Government.
